Computer skills classes bring opportunity and joy
“The computer classes helped me find my joy again,” said Mary’s Place guest Emily, who recently completed the Computer Basics class that is regularly offered as part of site programming at Mary’s Place. Emily was among 20 Mary’s Place guests who completed the four-week course taught by volunteers from Amazon Prime. The class recently returned to in-person instruction after being held virtually for the past two years due to COVID restrictions.
Computer classes are some of the most popular programs offered at Mary’s Place. “People of all ages sign up for this class. It’s wonderful to see our guests be empowered by their new skills,” said Hedwight Amoda who directs guest programming for Mary’s Place.
In today’s digital world, computer skills are critical to daily life from navigating health care, applying for jobs, searching for housing, and connecting with loved ones. Guests learn basic skills needed to browse the internet, create an email account, and find translation services among other important uses. Volunteers have also held sessions helping guests create resumes.
“We want to help guests with the things that are most useful to them, so we poll participants to understand what they want help with. It’s rewarding to see them access resources and even reconnect with family in some instances through the skills they learn in class,” said Heta Vasoya, volunteer and Software Development Manager at Amazon Prime.
Computer equipment at The Regrade family shelter for these classes is provided through the Gemdale Digital Literacy Grant.
