Writing with courage and curiosity
Victoria Mikael of Pearl Moon Writer’s Collective has worked with writers and artists around the globe, helping them share their stories and find an outlet through words. For the past year, she facilitated a writing circle for guests at the Mary’s Place Women’s Day Center. In this issue of the Pearl Moon Quarterly (Transitions, Contradictions, and Facing Fear), she describes the stories and creativity of writers from Mary’s Place as impressive, creative, committed, and brave. “I am so honored and thrilled to get to write, hold space, and create with them,” Victoria said.
Creative and artistic programming is something the Women’s Day Center has consistently offered guests. Writing allows women to share their stories, dreams, and talents. Writer and guest Terrell T. Williams recently shared her life experiences as a teenager and how her perspective and drive turned the experience into a positive. Prompted to write about a place that many people find scary but that she did not, Terrell wrote about her experience as a 15-year-old in prison.
“Prison, for me, was a great learning experience, and I met some wonderful people. What made it less scary was the educational opportunities. I was offered education, spirituality, and a bunch of other things. This resulted in me getting a GED, an associate degree in Office Systems Technology, and became the start of a general maintenance career that flourished,” Terrell wrote.
